I've found myself writing and thinking quite deeply about Winter Haven recently. Many of you read this piece about the stigmatized schools under state threat -- and a vision for saving them. Part 2 is coming tomorrow.
If you have questions or thoughts or criticisms about my ideas for Winter Haven and the wider district, I'd love to hear them firsthand. And it just so happens that the next 10 days or so will find me in Winter Haven often.
It starts tonight (Thursday) with the Winter Haven Chamber's Whistle Stop political rally and straw poll. Tickets had to be purchased in advance. So if you have a ticket, come see us. If not, here are two great opportunities this weekend.
1) Saturday night, I'm excited to take part in the Polk County Self Advocacy Alliance (PCSAA) forum from 6-9 p.m. at 36 North Idyllwild Drive in Winter Haven. I love the PCSAA's motto: "Nothing about us, without us." I see this as a tremendous chance to listen and learn.
2) Sunday afternoon from 4-6, we're holding an open Meet and Greet at the Derry Down in Downtown Winter Haven. We'll have food, fun, and freewheeling conversation. We look forward to seeing you there.
And then next weekend, I'll be attending the 1st Annual "Politics in the Park" event hosted by the East Central Polk Democratic Club and the Polk County Democratic Black Caucus. It's at Lake Maude Nature Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Attending these party events -- like the Lake Ashton Republican Club meeting last week -- is a fantastic way to see how many common interests we all have in revitalizing our School District.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at these events. And as always, if you'd like to help power this campaign, please consider contributing here.
