Commissioners approve $5M sheriff's spy plane without any guidelines or safeguards; Commissioner Rick Wilson then claims sheriff adamantly opposes using school zone speed cameras to protect kids.
They won't share the records. I tried to ask for policies related to the ALPR cameras to see if they were over policing lower income/primarily black and Latino neighborhood populations (because we know they are.) They stated surviellance information is an exception to the open records law (including how many cameras there are and what they have spent on them.)
I will say that they placed one of those cameras on 540 (one of the mobile ones affixed to the back of those Sheriff speed limit signs) and I complained to George Lindsay about it. Despite him claiming that he knew nothing about the cameras, it was removed from 540.
They do place the mobile alpr cameras in abandoned cars and on the back of the speed limits signs from time to time and it's not clear what or who they are looking for/monitoring. There is currently one on Clubhouse Road.
In France, they used planes to see the number of new swimming pools that were installed over the pandemic period, so they could be taxed. This could be used as a method to charge people per extra storage shed. In my town it's currently $100 per year per shed - it is outrageous to pay the government to store your lawn equipment on the property you own. Giving the government anything that they can use to monitor our properties given the conflict on carbon taxes which are based on paid for science is a risk. It's not just about privacy and storage, it's about potential misuse for tax purposes as they aren't going to pay for a 5 million dollar plan with just home grown weed. There has to be a financial benefit greater than trying to protect their licensed marijuana operation.
There is also concerns about normalizing cameras which made lead to facial recognition and controlled travel by C40 mayors. 14 cities have already announced their commitment to this agenda and over 500 American Mayors are part of this domestic terrorist cult aiming to control our meat, clothes and travel purchases.
