As they have since at least 2003, Florida's 2022 NAEP scores peaked in 4th grade and collapsed in 8th. The likely culprits: 1) 3rd grade retention 2) Voucher kid movement 3) Deep test fatigue
There is not one government funded agency/ service/ program that has not been decimated by Republican grift. I worked 37 years in criminal justice and can attest to the privatization of prisons as an example.
I once worked for a company in Washington, D.C. that did NAEP survey research for the Dept. Of Education. My company was small, so our prime contracts were relatively small; however, we also subcontracted to huge RESEARCH corporations that were paid MILLIONS upon millions for survey research work year after year for DoED. Make no mistake: NAEP is big business for the private sector and is not about to go away. So, what does that mean for our public school students? I don’t know, but am not optimistic. (I am a former high school teacher and my heart breaks for students when I think about the future of our education systems.)
Great piece, Billy! Oh, for the good old days of Bob Graham when we had a governor working hard on education and Florida was in the top half of the states in every ranking! Now we have no child left behind untested.
