At least we can all laugh at the loser Anthony Pedicini (and Jennifer Canady)
On the second Night of Trump, how do you lose (by 6 points) in 59 percent Trump-voting Jefferson County to a Democrat, even one as awesome as Allison Tant?
The downward spiral of formerly cocky GOP political consultant Anthony Pedicini continues apace.
Pedicini’s “clients” are heavily concentrated in Polk County. But this result from Jefferson County has to be the single most embarrassing result for any political consultant in Florida (of any party) from Tuesday night.
Pedicini’s candidate managed to underperform Trump by 11 points in the Jefferson County portion of Rep. Allison Tant, D-Tallahassee’s district — and lose it to her outright by 6 points.
Overall, she beat Pedicini’s empty suit candidate 57-43 in a Dem-leaning district. But it’s the Jefferson County numbers that tell you how badly the former cover boy Pedicini failed — yet again.
Tant also happens to be Florida’s most effective legislator in either party. It’s good for everyone that she remains in office.
What Jefferson County tells us about scale, very good public service, and actual human experience in elections
Of course, if you have read me at all in the last two or three years, you know that Influence Boy, for all his pathetic mailers, was not the main reason Allison Tant won in Jefferson County.
Allison Tant won in Jefferson County because, politically, she almost single-handedly saved the tiny Jefferson County K-12 public school from charter school grifters, Manny Diaz, Richard Corcoran, Ralph Arza, etc.
Her fellow Democrat, Jackie Pons, saved the school operationally, as its principal. Then the jealous and bonkers charter-backed GOP superintendent fired him in a snit. Jackie Pons decided to run for Jefferson super to save the school again. The GOP charter-backed superintendent lost her primary to the guy Jackie beat on the Night of Trump II — with an even bigger margin than Tant.
(I may have had a small hand in saving Jefferson schools journalistically. So this was a pretty good win for me, too.)
Jefferson produced a ton of Trump/Pons voters — and by a ton, I mean 1000 or so.
If Jefferson was bigger — say 30,000 votes — the anonymity of party and identity narrative likely would have taken over. But Jefferson is small enough that the lived experience of the actual public service at question — as delivered by actual human being public servants — drove the outcome. The distance between human reality and abstraction is a defining human condition — in political power and beyond.
More on this later, but if Trump and Elon actually follow-through on their quite explicit promises to crash the stock market by destroying everything MAGA depends in the federal government and raise prices radically, simultaneously, a shit ton of MAGAs will finally get to feel the lived experience of MAGA in a way likely to dent the anonymity of party and identity. The distance between reality and abstraction will be annihilated.
And there will be no libs to save you this time — like Allison and Jackie did for Jefferson.
We’ll be too busy trying to save ourselves — but not too busy to say we told you so.
6-week Canadys vs. 15-week MAGAs. Trump should punish Jennifer Canady for her disloyalty to MAGA’s interests
Speaking of Pedicini, it seems obvious to anyone who looks that his marquee “client” Jennifer Canady, R-Lakeland sponsored 6-week-forced birth (after lying to everybody’s face) entirely to help Ron DeSantis beat Trump in the GOP primary. She certainly didn’t believe in it enough to campaign against it or even acknowledge its existence in public.
In return for helping him try to beat Trump, DeSantis made Canady speaker in some theoretical future. Full discussion here.
Trump, if he has any dictator self-respect, should take that speakership away from Canady.
How Trump planned to vote on Amendment 4 was by far the single most annoying thing he had to deal with in Florida. He was still big mad about it on Election Day.
Jennifer Canady did that to you, sir. Are you just gonna take it? LOL.
Moreover, I have no idea why victorious, but self-loathing, Trump campaign manager Susie Wiles would come back to Florida and let Canady keep that speakership. It’s my understanding she took the Trump gig entirely to punish DeSantis anyway for some petty reason.
Florida and Polk both clearly rejected the only thing Jennifer Canady will ever do
Let’s be very clear: 58 percent of Floridians prefer abortion-on-demand to 6-week forced birth. 51 percent of Canady’s home county — Grady Judd’s county — prefer abortion-on-demand to 6-week forced birth.
Let’s also be clear: Amendment 4 was not abortion-on-demand; it was just Roe.
But DeSantis’ state-funded Amendment 4 campaign painted it as unlimited babykilling. You get a baby to kill. And you get baby to kill. And you get a baby to kill. That was basically the anti-4 campaign.
And 58 percent of Floridians said “we’ll take the babykilling.” Well done, fake pro-lifers.
This is not at all 2nd-guessing: but if Amendment 4 had been 15-weeks plus real health and rape/incest exceptions, it would have gotten 85 percent. There wouldn’t even have been a campaign against it.
Meanwhile, forced birth lost all over the country on Night of Trump II, where most state referenda didn’t have to get to 60. The “pro-life” movement does not exist.
The vocabulary, now, is forced birth and when and why. That is a healthy development.
Will Polk’s MAGAs sit back and let Pedicini’s welfare continue?
If you follow this at all, you know there’s a lot of MAGA hate for Pedicini.
I don’t fully understand all the ins and outs of it. But they don’t like him. MAGA was a big part of the anti-Pedicini/developer coalition in Sarasota and Manatee. And yet, his biggest welfare checks, near as I can tell, come from the Polk County elite through the candidates it sends to Tallahassee.
This would be a good time for all Pedicini clients to look at his performance and ask themselves, if he could lose to a Democrat in Jefferson County on Night of Trump II, what’s he gonna do when MAGA comes for me? Why am I serving as a human pass-through for Pedicini welfare checks?
You’re gonna have to answer that question for yourselves this time, Polk elite and Canadys; this lib is officially on help strike.
Glad that the voters of Jefferson County chose the candidate who truly represents them. What happened to Jefferson County schools under the leadership of Richard Corcoran and Manny Diaz (and their minions) is a disgrace. We need real representatives, like Alison Tant. And thank you Billy for your reporting about Jefferson County. No doubt it made a difference.
As we mentally process the election results, there’s an important fact to keep front and center - the popular vote totals. While it may be a while before the numbers are finalized, right now (11/7), it appears that Trump got somewhat FEWER votes than in 2020 (72m vs 74m). There was no massive shift - no “red wave” - sweeping the country. The big difference is that 81m voted for Biden in 2020 while only 68m showed up for Harris. The about 13 MILLION votes that disappeared - a “blue flu” if you will.
While some of that was surely due to active voter suppression, I suspect that most was self-suppression. The fight got too tiresome, too much manure to be shoveled, and a lot of voters quit. They stayed home.
This is not a condemnation, but a recognition of reality. America has not so much embraced evil (although many voted to do so) as we have lost the will to resist it.
